Designing, analyzing, and contributing to the security of electronic voting in the wild

Voting on the Internet is common today. However, the security of the systems in use remain largely under-studied. In this talk, I will tell a recent story about the security of the system used by the French citizens living abroad during the 2022 legislative elections. Based on this experience, I will present how we could ideally prevent these kind of flaws (formally defining the expected security and conducting formal analyses), but also how we, as researchers, can concretely contribute to the security of such systems. Finally, I will conclude with open (research) questions.
